Securing Veterans’ Pension and Aid and Attendance Benefits

Helping Elder Veterans Apply for Veterans’ Benefits
The Veteran Administration offers two types of payments for Elderly Veterans to assist with any financial burden that the Elder may be experiencing. Basic Veterans’ Pension is available to those whose income falls below the annual pension rate set by Congress and Veterans may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit if they require home care assistance from another individual with tasks of daily living such as personal hygiene management, feeding, bathing, etc.

Veterans’ Pension and Aid & Attendance Benefit Requirements

  • Served at least 90 days of active duty with at least one day during a wartime period: World War II, Vietnam War, Korean War, or Gulf War
  • At least 65 years old, fully disabled, receiving Social Security Disability Insurance, or Supplemental Security Income
  • Have countable income that falls below the Maximum Annual Pension Rate. This is where you can see if you’re eligible for any of the benefits and get an estimate on how much you may be eligible for. It is the difference between the MAPR and your countable income LESS any recurring medical expenses.
  • For those who can qualify for Aid and Attendance, you need to submit proof to the VA regional office that provides evidence of your need for living assistance from another person. A detailed physician’s report and any relevant documents should be submitted.
